WAREHOUSE RAM RAID PROTECTION: INSTALLING ANTI-RAM BOLLARDS AFTER VEHICLE ATTACK

Warehouse Ram Raid: Why Roller Doors Are Not Enough

Recently we completed a bollard installation at a warehouse that had been ram raided by a vehicle.

The attackers used a vehicle to drive directly into the entrance and force access to the building. Incidents like this are becoming increasingly common across warehouses, retail units, and industrial sites.

Many business owners assume that roller shutter doors provide strong protection. Unfortunately, most shutter systems are designed primarily for weather protection and basic security rather than resisting the force of a moving vehicle.

Even a small car can generate enough impact to breach a door or deform the frame surrounding it.

A ram raid is a burglary method where a vehicle is deliberately driven into a building to break through doors or windows and gain entry.

Once the barrier is breached, the attackers often have only seconds to enter the building and remove stock or equipment.

The Problem With Warehouse Entrances

Warehouses and industrial units are particularly vulnerable to vehicle attacks because they often have:

  • Large roller shutter doors
  • Wide vehicle access points
  • Minimal perimeter barriers
  • High value stock or equipment

This makes them attractive targets for ram raiders.

A vehicle can deliver enough force to breach standard building facades, meaning even reinforced doors can be vulnerable if there is no external protection.

Without a physical barrier in front of the building, the door itself becomes the first line of defence.

The Solution: Anti-Ram Bollards

To protect this warehouse from another attack, we installed heavy duty anti-ram bollards at the entrance.

Security bollards act as a physical barrier between vehicles and buildings. When installed correctly, they prevent vehicles from reaching vulnerable areas such as entrances, loading bays, or shopfronts.

These posts are designed to absorb or redirect the impact of a vehicle, stopping it before it reaches the structure behind it.

Installation Details

For this project we installed deep-set steel bollards positioned directly in front of the warehouse entrance.

Each bollard was embedded approximately 700 mm into the ground and secured in reinforced concrete.

This creates a strong fixed barrier that cannot easily be removed or displaced.

The goal is simple. If a vehicle attempts to ram the entrance again, it will hit the bollards instead of the building.

Types of Bollards Available

Depending on the property and access requirements, different types of bollards can be installed.

At ÉireSafe we supply and install:

Permanent bollards
Heavy duty fixed posts that provide continuous protection.

Retractable bollards
These can be lowered when vehicle access is required and raised to secure the area.

Removable bollards
Ideal for areas where occasional vehicle entry is necessary.

Traffic and safety bollards
Used for vehicle control, pedestrian safety, and property protection.

Security bollards are widely used to protect buildings, pedestrians, and infrastructure from vehicle impact and deliberate attacks.

Protecting Businesses From Ram Raids

Ram raids can cause serious financial damage.

Beyond the initial structural damage, businesses often face:

  • Lost stock
  • Insurance claims and excess costs
  • Operational downtime
  • Increased security risk

Installing bollards is one of the most effective ways to stop these attacks before they happen.

By placing strong steel posts in front of vulnerable entry points, vehicles simply cannot reach the building.

Bollard Installation Across Ireland

At ÉireSafe we install bollards for:

  • Warehouses and industrial units
  • Shopfronts and retail stores
  • Driveways and residential properties
  • Car parks and commercial sites
  • Public areas and pedestrian zones

Every site is different, so the spacing, depth, and type of bollard must be chosen carefully to provide the correct level of protection.

Better ÉireSafe Than Sorry

This warehouse installation is a good example of how a simple security upgrade can prevent serious damage in the future.

Roller doors may look strong, but without proper vehicle barriers they remain vulnerable.

Bollards provide the first and most important line of defence.

If your business, warehouse, or property has vulnerable access points, our team can assess the site and recommend the right bollard system.
